D-STATCOM for Sag and Swell Correction
Voltage sags and swells are common power quality issues that can disrupt sensitive electrical equipment. The Distribution Static Synchronous Compensator (D-STATCOM) is a flexible solution designed to mitigate these disturbances effectively.
A D-STATCOM operates as a voltage source converter (VSC) connected to the distribution system via a coupling transformer. It injects or absorbs reactive power dynamically to regulate the voltage at the point of common coupling (PCC). During a voltage sag, the D-STATCOM supplies reactive power to boost the voltage, while during a swell, it absorbs excess reactive power to stabilize the system.
The control strategy typically involves a fast-acting feedback loop that monitors the grid voltage and adjusts the D-STATCOM's output in real time. Advanced techniques like PWM modulation ensure precise compensation, minimizing transient disturbances.
By improving voltage stability, D-STATCOMs enhance the reliability of industrial and commercial power systems, reducing equipment downtime and improving overall power quality.
