Field Oriented Control (FOC), also known as vector control, is a widely used technique for high-performance control of induction motors. Unlike traditional scalar control methods that only regulate voltage and frequency, FOC decouples torque and flux components by transforming stator currents into a rotating reference frame aligned with the rotor flux.

The key principle involves breaking down the stator current into two orthogonal components: the direct-axis (Id) for flux control and the quadrature-axis (Iq) for torque control. By maintaining proper alignment with the rotor flux, FOC achieves dynamic performance comparable to DC motor drives, including fast torque response and precise speed regulation.

Modern implementations rely on mathematical transformations (Clarke/Park transforms) and require accurate rotor position information, typically obtained from encoders or estimated through sensorless algorithms. Field Oriented Control is fundamental in applications demanding precise motion control, such as industrial automation and electric vehicles.
