One of the unique features of ABAQUS is its ability to accurately analyze fracture mechanics problems, which has made it a mainstay in the Fracture Group at the Mechanical Engineering Department of Glasgow University. This group has utilized ABAQUS to great effect in their research, and has contributed significantly to the development of fracture mechanics theory and practice.

In addition, a software program has been developed to transfer data from ABAQUS into a MATLAB readable environment. This program was a result of a research program in Constraint Estimation in Fracture Mechanics, which was funded by a grant from the Defence Research Agency through the leadership of Prof. J. Sumpter. The development of this program has greatly enhanced the ability of researchers to analyze and interpret ABAQUS data, and has opened up new avenues of research in the field of fracture mechanics.
